Week 7 – Unity In The Church

Series: The Vision of the Church

Text: Ephesians 4:1–6 / John 17:21

Theme: Christ’s Church is essentially One. Though men have divided it into denominations and traditions, in God’s sight it is one Body, one Spirit, and one Lord.

1. The Call to Walk Worthy

Ephesians 4:1 – Walk worthy of your calling.

Philippians 1:27 – Live worthy of the gospel, striving together.

Unity begins with humility and obedience.

2. The Character That Protects Unity

Ephesians 4:2 – Lowliness, gentleness, longsuffering, love.

Philippians 2:3 – Esteem others better than yourself.

Unity requires dying to self.

3. The Unity of the Spirit

Ephesians 4:3 – Keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

1 Corinthians 12:13 – Baptized into one body by one Spirit.

Unity is God-given; our role is to guard it.

4. The Sevenfold Unity of the Church

Ephesians 4:4–6 – One Body, One Spirit, One Hope, One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism, One God and Father.

Romans 8:9; Jude 3; 1 Corinthians 8:6 – These eternal realities bind us together.

5. The Implications of Unity

Reject sectarianism (1 Corinthians 1:13).

Pursue reconciliation (1 Corinthians 1:10).

Value every member (1 Corinthians 12:21).

Unity glorifies Christ (John 13:35).

6. The Witness of Unity

John 17:21 – Jesus prayed that we would be one, so the world would believe.

Our oneness displays Christ to a divided world.

Key Truths:

“There is one body and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all.” – Ephesians 4:4–6

“That they all may be one… that the world may believe that You sent Me.” – John 17:21
